| TI,
a Conservative congregation, traces its roots back to the 1880's
& 1890's,
when Eastern European Jewish immigrants began arriving in Springfield.
They established
an Orthodox synagogue, B'nai Abraham, on 7th and Mason Streets,
where many Jewish families had shops and businesses. The congregation
was re-chartered in 1957 as a Conservative
synagogue under the name Temple Israel.
Prayer services are along Conservative lines,
& participation in worship is egalitarian. TI has a Sisterhood,
offers gifts from the Erma Cohn Memorial Gift Shop, and the Potish
Memorial Library, which contains over 1,000 volumes of fiction/nonfiction
books. Our Chevra Kadisha also manages the Temple's burial plot
at Oak Ridge Cemetary, & oversees funeral preparations for
departed members.
TI participates in the program of SBJE, & its members are
eligible to attend Sunday School
and Hebrew classes sponsored by SBJE.
